The team was supposed to leave for New York on Monday morning local time, with onward flights to Dubai and then India, but these plans have been spurned by the rapidly intensifying Category 4 hurricane. The Bridgetown airport is being readied for closure, and how they can leave now remains to be seen.
Hurricane Beryl, which is heading towards Barbados and will directly affect islands like Saint Lucia and Grenada, will continue into the area hazardous. The NHC says heavy rain and airports shuttering could make things exceedingly difficult for the team to travel.
