I have not announced retirement, says Mary Kom

Amidst widespread speculation about her future following the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, Indian boxing legend M C Mary Kom dismissed retirement rumors, despite being beyond the international cut-off age for amateur boxers.

The 41-year-old, a six-time world champion and Olympic bronze medalist in 2012, faced a social media storm after purportedly stating that she was forced to retire due to the 40-year age limit for amateur boxers. However, Mary Kom clarified in a statement that she had been misquoted, emphasizing that a formal retirement announcement is not imminent.

Contrary to reports, Mary Kom stated, "I haven't announced retirement yet, and I have been misquoted. I will personally come in front of the media whenever I want to announce it." She explained that her comments about age restrictions were made in the context of international rules and not indicative of her specific retirement plans.

During an event in Dibrugarh, Assam, in January 2024, Mary Kom expressed her desire to continue achieving in sports despite the age limit in the Olympics. She affirmed her ongoing focus on fitness and requested a correction to the misrepresentation of her statements.

The celebrated boxer, absent from competition since her pre-quarterfinal loss in the Tokyo Olympics, faced challenges, including a torn ACL that led to her withdrawal from the 2022 Commonwealth Games trials. Despite setbacks, she resumed training after rehabilitation and believes she has 3-4 competitive years left.

In Mary Kom's absence, Nikhat Zareen took over the 51kg slot, securing two consecutive world titles. Mary Kom has transitioned into administrative roles within the Indian Olympic Association, heading an oversight panel investigating sexual harassment charges against a wrestling federation head.

Notably, Mary Kom refrained from professional boxing, where there is no age limit. Renowned as 'Magnificent Mary,' she holds six Asian titles and six world gold medals, making her one of India's most decorated sportspersons. A recipient of the Khel Ratna award, she served as a Rajya Sabha MP and was honored with the Padma Vibhushan in 2020. The uncertainty surrounding Mary Kom's future continues to captivate the sports community.
