Gavaskar Applauds Rohit Sharma's Innings as Encouraging Prelude to T20 World Cup

To start with, Sharma's slump was very much in evidence right after his impressive unbeaten 105 against Chennai Super Kings earlier in the season. He failed to replicate that form, getting out for single-digit scores in seven outings.

Sunil Gavaskar reckons that Rohit Sharma's resurgence, though timely for him, has perhaps come a trifle too late to salvage Mumbai Indians' season. The former India great believes Sharma's return to form augurs well not just for him but also for the Indian team, who are getting ready for the impending T20 World Cup.

But in Mumbai Indians' final fixture of the season, Sharma looked his brilliant best as he smashed a blistering 38-ball 68, studded with three colossal sixes. This performance delighted fans and pundits alike, including Gavaskar.

Expressing his delight, Gavaskar remarked, “Well, that was such a nice thing to see. Because look, we know that Mumbai Indians can't qualify, but to see Rohit Sharma, the Indian captain for the T20 World Cup starting in about 15 days' time, batting the way that he has, it's very heartening," during an appearance on Star Sports Cricket Live.

He pointed out that the form of Sharma was crucial to the team's success, especially in giving the team a solid start-up so that the lower-order batsmen can cash on and can score over 200 in every game.

With the T20 World Cup fast approaching, India have lined up a visit to the USA and will play a warm-up game against Bangladesh before starting their campaign against Ireland in New York on June 5.
