India's men's cricket team head coach and ex-BJP MP Gautam Gambhir complained to the Delhi Police after he was sent death threats by email.
They came just a day after the horrific terror attack in Pahalgam killed at least 26 people and left several others injured.
In an email to the Station House Officer (SHO) of Rajender Nagar and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central), Gambhir's personal secretary outlined the details: "As we spoke, below please find the 'Threat Mails' received on the mail ID of Mr Gautam Gambhir (Ex-MP) Head Coach Indian Cricket Team. Kindly register the F.I.R accordingly and secure the safety and security of the family."
Gambhir, who had condemned the Pahalgam attack, was filled with grief and outrage at the attack and went live with a powerful message on social media. "Praying for the families of the deceased. Those responsible for this will pay. India will strike," he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The Resistance Front (TRF), a Pakistan-based terror group and a proxy of banned Lashkar-e-Taiba, has taken responsibility for the attack, making it the most serious attack in the region in recent history.
Gambhir has been targeted like this before. He had received similar threats in 2021, after which the Delhi Police enhanced security outside his residence in Rajendra Nagar.
Gambhir joined politics in 2019 and was the Member of Parliament representing East Delhi under the banner of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He withdrew from politics prior to the 2024 general elections.
To explain his resignation, he had posted on X, "I have asked Hon'ble Party President JP Nadda ji to excuse me from my political responsibilities so I can concentrate on my forthcoming cricket commitments. I thank Hon'ble PM Narendra Modi from the bottom of my heart for entrusting me with the privilege of serving the people. Jai Hind."
A stalwart in Indian cricket, Gambhir represented the country for 15 years before hanging up his boots in 2018.
