Players who didn't even make it to the T20 World Cup team, like Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, get to play this series as senior players like Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah are set to rest. The likes of KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav will be among the potential contenders to take over the vice-captaincy role from Pandya, although concerns over his past in relation to fitness could work against him.

In the meeting, Gambhir from his New Delhi home is said to have made it clear that his main area while picking a player was selecting only those players who were clear-headed and decided on being committed to the team's cause.
