Spanish teen sensation Carlos Alcaraz pulled off a stunning victory over Italy's Jannik Sinner to reach the French Open men's singles final. The 18-year-old Spaniard had fought back after a two-sets-to-one deficit to triumph after four hours and 9 minutes of battle.
Third-seeded Alcaraz proved his mettle after stunning the second-seeded Sinner from behind, the scores being 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. The match was a testimonial to the incredible shotmaking the 18-year-old made, with 65 winners, to finally make his way through and appear in his first-ever Roland-Garros final.
He now has three appearances in major finals, having won the US Open in 2022 and Wimbledon in 2023.
Defending champion Novak Djokovic's absence ensured a new champion was to be crowned at the 2024 French Open. Now the No.1 seed in the world, with Djokovic out, there was no stopping Sinner from landing the prestigious title.
Sinner, ranked second in the world, raced to a 6-2 win in the opening set. Oozing confidence and accuracy, the Italian nicely and firmly took advantage of every Alcaraz miss to break serve. Alcaraz, however, soon dialed in during the second set, recovering impressively to even the score at one set apiece.
Alcaraz then took the second set at 6-3 with powerful groundstrokes and relentless drive.
He continued playing aggressively in the third set, opening up with a lead; however, Sinner scraped through the hard-fought set to take a 2-1 lead. Alcaraz showed his brilliance and took the fourth set.
With an early break in the deciding set, Alcaraz raised his game and produced sensational winners. He was always ahead with his never-say-die attitude and took the win to book a memorable final spot at the venue.
Though Alcaraz now plays the waiting game for his opponent come Sunday, tennis fans across the world will look forward to seeing the fairytale journey at the Roland-Garros 2024.
