Delhi Court Directs Formal Charges Against Former WFI Chief in Female Wrestlers' Harassment Case

A Delhi court issued a ruling on Friday, directing the formal charging of BJP MP and former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, with offenses including sexual harassment, using force to violate women's modesty, and criminal intimidation, in connection with allegations of harassment involving female wrestlers.

Recently, the court rejected a request from Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for further examination of evidence regarding his whereabouts on September 7, 2022, the date of the alleged incident.

The plea had argued for a thorough investigation into his assertions of being overseas at the time of the purported incident. It also sought creation of Call Detail Records by Delhi Police.

Delhi Police, through Additional Public Prosecutor Atul Srivastava, countered the plea, saying that the 'last-minute' move indicated a 'malafide intention' to protract the case. He pointed out the legal implications of reopening the investigation at this stage.

Counsel for the complainants attacked the plea as being stalled for stalling the case. They pointed out that all the necessary documents should have been procured long back under Section 207 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which deals with proof of documents to be given to accused..
