Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has inscribed his name in history as the fourth Indian men's batter—and the tenth overall—to make 11,000 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs). He reached the milestone in the 2025 Champions Trophy Group A match against Bangladesh at the Dubai International Stadium on Thursday.
Right-handed Rohit achieved the milestone in style by hitting Mustafizur Rahman over mid-on for a boundary off the fifth ball of the fourth over. With this achievement, he joins an exclusive club of Indian cricketers including Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Sourav Ganguly, who have all scored more than 11,000 runs in ODIs.
Remarkably, Rohit is now the second-fastest men’s player to achieve this milestone, taking 261 innings to reach the mark. He follows Kohli, who accomplished the feat in just 222 innings. In terms of balls faced, Rohit also ranks second, having played 11,868 deliveries, just behind Kohli’s tally of 11,831 balls.
Among ODI batting greats, Tendulkar is still the record highest run-scorer with more than 18,000 runs in 452 innings, second only to Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka with 14,234 runs.
In the meantime, in the same game, veteran pacer Mohammed Shami created a new record by becoming the quickest Indian bowler to take 200 wickets in men's ODIs. Shami achieved the milestone in 104 games, breaking India's chief selector Ajit Agarkar's earlier record of achieving it in 133 games.
Shami, who is 34, is now joint second-fastest bowler in the world to reach 200 wickets in men's ODIs along with former Pakistan spinner and coach Saqlain Mushtaq. Australia's Mitchell Starc leads the chart by reaching the milestone in only 102 matches. But in the number of balls bowled, Shami is the quickest to reach 200 wickets, having done so in just 5,126 deliveries, breaking Starc's tally of 5,240 balls.
In the same match, Virat Kohli also grabbed the headlines as he matched Mohammad Azharuddin's record of most catches as an India fielder in men's ODIs by reaching 156. Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene (218) and Australia's Ricky Ponting (160) are the only two players to have taken more catches as fielders in the history of ODIs.
