Champions Trophy: Gambhir Hits Back at Critics, Says India’s Venue Advantage Debate is Immature

India charged into the final with a four-wicket victory over Australia at the Dubai International Stadium, their fourth successive game at the ground. Other teams, however, had to travel between Pakistan and the Middle East because of the Indian government's refusal to send the team to Pakistan. This move invited criticism from the fans of other countries.

India team chief Gautam Gambhir responded to critics on Tuesday, pouring scorn on allegations of India gaining an "undue advantage" in the Champions Trophy 2025 by having all their matches at one venue. Launching a subtle dig at the complainers, Gambhir called for the "perpetual cribbers" to "grow up."

"Kaunsi undue advantage? (What undue advantage?) We practice at the ICC Academy, where the conditions are not the same as in the stadium. There are some individuals who simply like complaining—they have to grow up," Gambhir said during the post-match press conference.

India’s chase of 265 was powered by Virat Kohli’s masterful 84, alongside valuable contributions from Shreyas Iyer (45), KL Rahul (42*), and Hardik Pandya’s explosive 28 off 24 balls, ensuring their place in the final of the eight-team tournament.

In spite of a steady tournament with the bat—83 runs in three innings—KL Rahul has gone unbeaten twice, showing his class to hold the fort when required. Defending Rahul's role, Gambhir came firmly behind him, putting emphasis on what he delivers rather than mere numbers.

"I don't mind criticism. I am true to my profession and to 140 crore Indians. KL scores 50 in ODIs on average—I don't care what anyone says. It's not about where he is batting, but the effect he has. We need effect, and KL brings depth at No.6," Gambhir said.
