Stars took birth 250 to 350 mn years after Big Bang: Study
Researchers at University College London (UCL) and the University of Cambridge examined six of the most distant galaxies currently known, whose light has taken most of the universe's lifetime to reach us. They found that the distance of these galaxies away from Earth corresponded to a "look back" time of more than 13 billion years ago, when the universe was only 550 million years old.
Coronavirus epidemic hit East Asia 20,000 years ago
The study found that the outbreak left traces in the genetic makeup of people from East Asia, an area that is now China, Japan, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, and Taiwan, said the researchers from the Queensland University of Technology, University of Adelaide, the University of California San Francisco, and the University of Arizona.
Astronauts complete installing 1st solar arrays outside ISS
Two astronauts onboard the International Space Station (ISS) have successfully completed the deployment of solar arrays, which will soak up the sun's energy to provide electrical power for the numerous research and science investigations conducted every day, as well as the continued operations of the orbiting platform.
NASA finishes assembling Artemis moon mission rocket
The engineers at Florida's Kennedy Space Center have finished lowering the 65m tall core stage in between two smaller booster rockets, the BBC reported on Saturday. It is the first time all three key elements of the rocket have been together in their launch configuration, the report said.
Astronomers spot a 'blinking giant' near Milky Way
The star, VVV-WIT-08, decreased in brightness by a factor of 30, so that it nearly disappeared from the sky. While many stars change in brightness because they pulsate or are eclipsed by another star in a binary system, it is exceptionally rare for a star to become fainter over a period of several months and then brighten again, the team said.
Covid lockdowns cut NOx emissions, global ozone by 15%: NASA
As a result of the lower NOx emissions, by June 2020, global ozone levels had dropped to a level that policymakers thought would take at least 15 years to reach by conventional means, such as regulations. The more stringent the lockdown a nation imposed, the greater the reduction in emissions.
Warmer temperatures not enough to prevent Covid spread: Study
"Our results show that temperature changes have a much smaller effect on transmission than policy interventions, so while people remain unvaccinated, governments mustn't drop policies like lockdowns and social distancing just because a seasonal change means the weather is warming up," said first author Tom Smith, from the Department of Life Sciences at Imperial.
NASA's Juno sends 1st images of Jupiter's largest moon
During the flyby on June 7, Juno came within 645 miles (1,038 kilometres) of the surface of Jupiter's largest moon Ganymede and took two images from the Jupiter orbiter's JunoCam imager and from its Stellar Reference Unit star camera. The photos show the surface of Ganymede in remarkable detail, including craters, clearly distinct dark and bright terrain, and long structural features possibly linked to tectonic faults.
NASA's Juno to make closest flyby to Jupiter's largest Moon on June 7
The solar-powered Juno spacecraft will fly past Ganymede at 1:35 p.m. EDT (10:35 a.m. PDT). The flyby will be the closest-known since NASA's Galileo spacecraft made its penultimate close approach back on May 20, 2000. The flyby will yield striking insights into the moon's composition, ionosphere, magnetosphere, and ice shell. Juno's measurements of the radiation environment near the moon will also benefit future missions to the Jovian system
NASA-SpaceX Dragon launches 7,300lb of cargo to space station
The SpaceX Dragon spacecraft launched on a Falcon 9 rocket at 1.29 p.m. EDT on Thursday from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the US space agency has said. It is scheduled to autonomously dock at the ISS around 5 a.m. Saturday, June 5, and remain at the station for about a month.
