Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra formally revealed her marriage to former Biju Janata Dal MP Pinaki Mishra on Thursday, thanking followers for their love and blessings.
The marriage had been the centre of much speculation, with news emerging the couple had wed in private in Germany.
Thank you all for the love and good wishes!! So grateful," Moitra posted on X, along with a picture of the couple cutting a cake.
Soon, social media flooded with congratulatory wishes. Saayoni Ghosh, TMC Lok Sabha member from Jadavpur, posted her greetings on X: "Congratulations Mm & Pm.Mahua Moitra, Pinaki Misra, wishing you a lifetime of love and laughter!"
A few TMC and BJD MPs reached by the media denied knowing anything about the marriage. Though Moitra's tweet affirmed the wedding, the Press Trust of India (PTI) could not independently confirm the details of the ceremony, although the photo of the couple has been widely shared on the internet.
Mahua Moitra, 50, who was an investment banker turned politician, is in her second term as Member of Parliament from Krishnanagar, West Bengal. She started with Indian Youth Congress and joined TMC in 2010. Earlier, she was married to Danish financier Lars Brorson.
In 2023, Moitra was embroiled in a political row when she was suspended from the Lok Sabha on charges of accepting money and presents from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in return for asking questions in parliament. The charges, made by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey and initiated on the basis of a complaint by Moitra's friend and lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai, led to an official investigation. Moitra has always refuted all allegations of bribery. Despite being expelled, she got re-elected in 2024 from Krishnanagar.
Pinaki Mishra, 65, an old Supreme Court advocate, was MP four times from Puri, Odisha. An old BJD leader, he too had a previous marriage.
This marriage of these two old politicians has attracted much attention and warm greetings across party lines and social networking sites.
Sukanta Majumdar, Union Minister and West Bengal BJP president, sent his greetings: "I know both of them as fellow MPs. Congratulations to both of them."
TMC's senior leader Kunal Ghosh also congratulated Mahua Moitra.
