Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's recent statement endorsing Rahul Gandhi as the leader to become the Prime Minister after the upcoming Lok Sabha elections is speculated to spark internal tensions within the state Congress, according to sources.
Siddaramaiah made this statement during the 139th Foundation Day event of the party in Bengaluru. The remarks are anticipated to potentially strain the relationship between AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge and Siddaramaiah.
It's noteworthy that Mallikarjun Kharge's name had been proposed as the Prime Ministerial candidate by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during a recent meeting of the INDIA bloc in the national capital. However, Siddaramaiah had refrained from explicitly expressing his support for Kharge's candidacy.
In response to discussions about Kharge being considered for the PM post, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge, the son of Mallikarjun Kharge, raised questions about the focus on community considerations rather than efficiency. He emphasized the need to evaluate individuals based on their capabilities rather than merely their community affiliations.
The sources suggest that Siddaramaiah's reserved stance on Kharge's potential candidacy for the Prime Ministerial role has already led to questions and concerns within the state Congress, possibly indicating internal divisions on the matter.
