Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday referred to the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in Parliament as a "watershed moment" in India's march towards socio-economic justice, increased transparency, and inclusive development.
Emphasizing the significance of this legislative action, he stressed that it would most benefit those who have been long marginalized, making sure they are no longer deprived of their voice and opportunities.
Discussing X, PM Modi noted that the Waqf system for decades had suffered from a lack of transparency and accountability, typically placing Muslim women, economically weaker Muslims, and Pasmanda Muslims at a disadvantage. He said, "The passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill by both Houses of Parliament is a watershed moment in our collective pursuit of socio-economic justice, transparency, and inclusive growth." He added that these legislative reforms would not only increase transparency but also help safeguard people's rights.
The prime minister stated that he is confident that India is now shifting towards a more modern and socially equitable model.
"On a larger scale, we continue to hold dear the principle of giving top priority to the dignity of each citizen. That is also the way we create a stronger, more inclusive, and more compassionate India," he said. He also thanked all the members of Parliament who took part in discussions, expressed their opinions, and helped make the legislation stronger. He also thanked the public for the valuable feedback provided during the review process by the committee.
Recalling the value of democratic debates, Modi said, "Again and again, the value of large-scale debate and dialogue has been proved once more." The Bill was approved by the Rajya Sabha last night late evening, after having been approved by the Lok Sabha one day ago, despite robust opposition from an united opposition front.
