The violence broke out while protesting against the tomb of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb on Monday, which resulted in rampant vandalism of houses and cars.

Fadnavis, who is also the Home Minister, made public that 33 police personnel were injured during the violence, including three deputy commissioners of police (DCPs). A top police officer was allegedly attacked with an axe. In his announcement, the Chief Minister promised that the culprits behind attacking the police would be dealt strict action.

The violence forced imposition of the curfew in a number of places in Nagpur. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also chipped in and posited that an attempt had been made to attack one particular community. The two leaders emphasized the government's seriousness to ensure return to peace as well as ensure there were no more outbreaks.
