Manipur Crisis Resolution Expected Within 2-3 Months, Assures CM Biren Singh

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Friday announced that the State is on the verge of resolving the ethnic crisis soon.

Singh, who also handles the home portfolio, said solutions to the Manipur ethnic crisis are likely to be found in 2-3 months. He added that security forces on Lok Sabha election-related work in different parts of the country have come back to Manipur and are in the process of being deployed in sensitive and vulnerable areas of the state.

"Violence has considerably come down in the last few months in major parts of the state with sporadic incidents reported from a few areas," the Chief Minister told the media.

He added that the majority of such violent incidents were reported in the first seven months of the past 14 months; during the subsequent months, in most parts, the count of such incidents had come down sharply.

"In most parts of Manipur, schools, offices, and businesses have been functioning as usual. There were some reports of violence, but I expect that once central forces are back, it will be checked to a large extent," Singh said.

He further said that Prime Minister Modi, since assumptions of the third term, has been focusing on Manipur to bring peace to the state by every possible means.

Recently, Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a high-level meeting with top officials to go deeply into the Manipur issue.

"Both the Prime Minister and the Home Minister are closely monitoring developments in Manipur and are earnestly working to resolve the ethnic issues in the state," Singh said.

He has asked officials to ensure that central forces are deployed in a strategic manner at the June 17 meeting so that Manipur regains its peace and tranquility, and further incidents of violence do not take place.

Shah has also said that in the coming months, there would be discussions with leaders from both the Meitei and Kuki-Zomi communities and civil society groups pertaining to the ethnic crisis issue in Manipur.

Not long ago, Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey met with President Droupadi Murmu, Home Minister Shah, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to apprise them about the difficulties faced by the displaced people residing in relief camps at different locations in the state.
