Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's legal detention in a money laundering case linked to an alleged excise fraud has been prolonged by a Delhi court until May 20.
In a virtual court appearance, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) discussed the expiration of his previous custody order. Following this, Special Judge Kaveri Baweja, presiding over cases involving the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) at Rouse Avenue Courts, extended Kejriwal's detention until May 20. Additionally, Chanpreet Singh, a co-accused, had his detention similarly extended until the same date.
Kejriwal is now having his case for a temporary release heard by the Supreme Court.
Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the evening of March 21.
On April 10, Kejriwal filed an appeal challenging his imprisonment, but the Delhi High Court rejected it, stating that the ED had enough proof, along with statements from supporters and the AAP candidate, to show that Kejriwal had received funds for the Goa elections.
In response, the Delhi Chief Minister has filed a case with the Supreme Court against the aforementioned ruling issued by the panel of the Delhi High Court led by Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear his petition today.
