According to exit polls, the ruling BJP and Opposition Congress are locked in a neck-to-neck fight and a cliffhanger is expected on Thursday. The AAP is also trying its luck in the state this time.

Counting of votes for Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections began at 8am on Thursday. Elections for 68 Assembly seats of Himachal were held on 12 Nov 2022. 75.6%  per cent voter turnout was recorded in these elections. This was the highest high turnout in the history of Himachal Assembly elections, since 1967. According to exit polls, the ruling BJP and Opposition Congress are locked in a neck-to-neck fight and a cliffhanger is expected on Thursday. The AAP is also trying its luck in the state this time.

# Himachal Congress chief Pratibha banks on family legacy, contribution

Considering the family legacy and contribution, Congress Himachal Pradesh unit chief Pratibha Singh, who is banking largely on her legislator son Vikramaditya Singh for statewide campaigning, had sought votes in the assembly polls on development carried out by her husband during his six terms as the Chief Minister.

Sensing party heading to absolute majority in the state, Pratibha Singh, who has not contested the assembly polls, has been projected as the prospective Chief Minister.

Coming out openly after retaining his Shimla (Rural) seat for the second consecutive term, Vikramaditya Singh said, "We will form a government with a full majority... She (Pratibha Singh) is one of the contenders for the CM post."

# Congress nears 40-seat mark in 68-member Himachal Assembly

Crossing the halfway mark, the Congress on Thursday surged ahead of the ruling BJP by leading on 38 out of the 68 Himachal Pradesh Assembly seats while the ruling party was leading on 21 and winning four seats. The Congress won two seats till 2 p.m.

"We will form a government with a full majority...She (Pratibha Singh) is one of the contenders for the CM post," said Congress leader Vikramaditya Singh, who retained his Shimla (Rural) seat. He is the son of six-time chief minister and veteran leader late Virbhadra Singh.However, state party chief Pratibha Singh has not contested the poll.

Himachal Pradesh has not returned any incumbent government to power in the last nearly four decades.

It also plans to shift the MLAS to Rajasthan via Chandigarh.

According to sources, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is personally monitoring the situation. She has deputed Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda for the purpose, while state Incharge of the state Rajeev Shukla is in the process of talking to each elected MLA personally.

# Congress crosses half-way mark in Himachal; BJP slides

The Congress on Thursday was leading the initial vote count in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly polls. It crossed the half-way mark and was leading in 38 seats at around 11.40 a.m. The ruling BJP was leading in 33 seats earlier but, gradullay slid to 26 and had won one seat.

The independents were leading in three constituencies.

Independents, all BJP rebels, are Hoshiyar Singh from Dehra, Hiteshwar Singh from Banjar in Kullu and Ashish in Hamirpur Sadar, once the stronghold of two-time Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal.

As Himachal Pradesh has not returned any incumbent government to power in nearly four decades, early trends of ballot count of the first two hours on Thursday indicated 'see-sawing' trends with both the ruling BJP and the main Opposition Congress in the 68-member Assembly were neck and neck.

Trends at around 10.15 a.m. showed that the Congress was leading in 31 seats with the BJP on equal number. Four independents were also leading from their respective constituencies.

An hour after the counting of votes began for the Assembly elections, the BJP is leading in both Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat, as per the latest trends.

# Counting of votes for BJP-ruled Himachal Assembly begins

Amidst a tight contest, the counting of votes for the 68-member BJP-ruled Himachal Pradesh Assembly began on Thursday morning with tight security arrangements.

The high-stake election was held on November 12, sealing the electoral fate of 412 candidates, including 24 women. A 75.60 per cent voter turnout was recorded, breaking the 2017 record of 75.57 per cent.

The counting of votes began at 8 a.m. at 68 centres in 59 locations.

# Elaborate arrangements in place for counting of votes in Himachal

Elaborate arrangements have been put in place for the counting of votes for the 68-member assembly on Thursday with the deployment of around 10,000 staff, including the security personnel, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Maneesh Garg said on Wednesday. He said a team of returning officers and assistant returning officers have also been deployed to ensure smooth counting process.He said depending upon the availability of the space, a maximum of 14 counting tables and a minimum of eight tables would be available in the counting halls.
