Harbhajan Singh Demands 'Justice and Reflection' in Wake of Kolkata Medic's Rape-Murder

AAP MP took to his X handle and shared an open two-page letter addressed to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wherein he blasted the delay in delivering justice to the 31-year-old Kolkata rape and murder case victim.

Cricketer-turned-politician Harbhajan Singh expressed his "deep pain, anguish and intense outrage" over the ghastly attack on a Kolkata-based junior doctor that has raised countrywide protests demanding justice.

AAP MP took to his X handle and shared an open two-page letter addressed to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wherein he blasted the delay in delivering justice to the 31-year-old Kolkata rape and murder case victim.

In a letter starting with "a call for justice and introspection," Singh wrote to the Government of West Bengal, the CBI, and the people of India, condemning "that unspeakable act of violence which shook the conscience of all of us."

He called for stern and prompt action from Chief Minister Banerjee and West Bengal Governor C. V. Ananda Bose.

Terming it "not just a heinous crime against one individual but a grave assault on the dignity and safety of every woman in our society," Singh drew attention to deep pathologies in society at large and called for systemic change and change from the authorities.

"That such an atrocity should have been committed within the precincts of a medical institution, where healing and saving lives is the norm, is unbelievable and unacceptable," Singh wrote in a letter.

He further expressed his question over the safety of medical professionals: "The medical community is already working in challenging conditions. With such incidents, how can we expect them to perform their duties with dedication when their own safety is so gravely compromised?

On August 9, a postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered while on duty at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. This horrifying incident has triggered massive nationwide protests, demanding greater safety for women and severe punishment for the perpetrators.

"The safety and dignity of women are non-negotiable. The perpetrators of this heinous crime must face the full weight of the law, and the punishment must be exemplary. Only then can we begin to restore faith in our system," Singh concluded the post on X, with a letter.
