Giant Killer: Know Jeevan Jyot Kaur, the young lady who defeated Navjot Sidhu and Bikram Majithia

Jeevan Jot Kaur is a Social activist and the founder of the Hemkund Education Society. She takes an active part in providing education to needy children which is the major goal of the Hemkund Society. She is also known as the 'Pad woman' of Amritsar due to her widespread promotion of menstrual hygiene for women. Jeevan Jot is the chairperson of the S.H.E society which actively takes part in spreading awareness about women's health, women empowerment, and sanitary napkins.

Punjab Assembly election results have thrown many surprises. The scale of AAP victory came as a shock as the 10-year-old party won 92 out of 117 seats in the state Assembly. Many stalwarts were forced to bite the dust by the electorate in these elections and some of those who won against them are political greenhorns. One such name is Jeevan Jyot Kaur who emerged as a giant killer by defeating both Navjot Singh Sidhu and Bikram Majithia from the prestigious Amritsar East seat. So, who is Jeevan Jyot Kaur?

She is also known as the 'Pad woman' of Amritsar due to her widespread promotion of menstrual hygiene for women. Jeevan Jot is the chairperson of the S.H.E society which actively takes part in spreading awareness about women's health, women empowerment, and sanitary napkins. The organization also provides free pads and reusable pads to women in rural areas. According to media reports, Jeevan Jot had a tie-up with a company in Switzerland to provide reusable pads to women.

She has completed her LLB from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut. In the 2017 Assembly elections, she served as a volunteer in AAP.

She was a common person who entered politics and rose to the position of district president of the party in Amritsar and now has won the Amritsar seat elections against veteran politicians of Punjab.

After winning the seat, Jeevan Jot Kaur told media, "It's the victory of the people of Punjab. My ticket was announced around Dec 3 ...Got positive indication during door-to-door campaigns that Punjab has overcome identity politics."

The results of the Punjab Assembly elections 2022 were announced on March 10, Friday. It was expected by everyone that there would be a tough battle between Sidhu and Majithia on the Amritsar East seat but Jeevan Jot came up as Giant Killer defeating both.

She registered an incredible victory with 39,679 votes against the popular opposition candidates Navjot Singh(Indian National Congress) Singh and Bikram Singh Majithia( Shiromani Akali Dal). Sidhu secured the second position with 32,929 votes and Majithia third 25,188 votes. Punjab elections 2022 were held on February 20 and the result was declared on March 10, Thursday.
