The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a chargesheet on Monday against Sheikh Shahjahan, a former leader of the Trinamool Congress, identifying him as the mastermind behind an attack on an ED team and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel outside his home in West Bengal earlier this year.
The attack took place when ED officials, along with CAPF personnel, came to Shahjahan's house in Sandeshkhali, under West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, to conduct a raid.
The chargesheet filed before a special PMLA court in Kolkata charged Shahjahan of accumulating Rs 261 crore through illegal land acquisition in Sandeshkhali.
An ED counsel informed the court on Monday that investigators have so far identified 180 bighas (59.5 acres) of land that Shahjahan allegedly seized unlawfully in Sandeshkhali.
In addition to Shahjahan, the chargesheet names his brother Sheikh Alamgir and close associates Didar Bux Molla and Siboprasad Hazra as co-accused.
So far, the ED has seized properties and assets worth Rs 27 crore owned by Shahjahan.
The chargesheet is said to contain comprehensive details about the assets and properties seized by the ED officials.
Sources close to the case suggest that the chargesheet is prepared in such a way that it will become very difficult for Shahjahan to get bail.
