According to the statement given to Parliament recently, Minister of State (MoS) for Labour and Employment Shobha Karandlaje revealed that the country has witnessed the creation of about 16.83 crore new jobs in the past six financial years—from 2017-18 to 2023-24.
During this period, the country has witnessed a massive 35% jump in total employment at the national level while employment increased from 47.5 crore in 2017-18 to 64.33 crore as on March 2024, according to data sourced from the just released KLEMS—K: Capital, L: Labour, E: Energy, M: Materials, S: Services—report of the RBI, which keeps record of employment trends across the country.
He said the manufacturing sector, both formal and informal, contributed handsomely as it created 85 lakh new jobs from 2017-18 to 2022-23.
He also shared an elaborate plan by the government to curb this menace by adopting a mix of legislative, rehabilitation and socio-economic development measures coupled with those for free education. But most significantly, Centre prepared a model State Action Plan so that states can easily take up the task of ending this child labor in their respective areas. This pointed to an effort across the country to achieve this important agenda.
