In a recent disclosure, Kunal Bahl, the Co-founder of Snapdeal and an early-stage investor with Titan Capital, recounted a troubling experience with protein supplements that led to significant health complications.

However, within a span of six to eight weeks, the seemingly innocuous supplements resulted in severe health issues for Bahl. Fortunately, upon discontinuation, his health condition gradually improved. Urging caution, he cautioned others to be mindful of such products.

The catalyst for Bahl's revelation was a recent study published in the journal Medicine, shedding light on the potential risks associated with protein powders, including those enriched with herbal and dietary supplements. These supplements, comprising vitamins, minerals, and various natural or synthetic ingredients, were found to be linked with hepatotoxicity, as per the study.

The study, which was self-funded and transparent, undertook a meticulous analysis of popular protein supplements available in India. The aim was to identify potential hepatotoxic substances based on industrial standards. The findings revealed alarming trends, with many prominent formulations found to contain harmful heavy metals such as lead and arsenic. Additionally, some supplements featured hepatotoxic herbal extracts, raising concerns about their safety and efficacy.
