He has done his graduation in arts from Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, Delhi University. He studied acting from Film and Television Institute of India. In 2008, he completed his studies in the city of dreams, Mumbai, to fulfill his dream of becoming an actor.

He wanted to go ahead and create a different identity and his inspiration was Shahrukh Khan. Rao believed that if ShahRukh Khan from outside can make his name and his identity in this film world, then why not me?

With this inspiration, Rao kept moving forward and in 2010, his first film was 'LOVE SEX and CHEAT'. After doing a few more rolls, he made headlines once again with 'Kai Po Che' in 2013. After this, he was awarded for the best actor and film critics award for the role of Shahid Azmi in the biographical drama Shahid. After this, he showed his acting in one of the films like 'Queen, Citylights'.
