Some reports suggest that the billion-dollar idea was started as merely a hobby for Pierre. His fiance Pam was the dedicated collector of Pez Candy Dispenser. At that time, he was working in a programming company in silicon valley, which was a massive turnaround in his career. As he was busy with his schedule, he thought of developing an online site where people can post those candy dispensers and communicate with each other and decide the price. It was the easy way of bidding as it was done through email. Observing the many imperfections in the stock market, he envisioned that an online market bidding model would be a great idea.

To test things, Pierre himself posted the first item, which was never sold on the website. He then posted one broken laser pointer at 1$ only. And that product went at 14.83$ which was a remarkable deal. In the first month, he invested 250$ and generated the revenue of 1000$, which was a great start. And in a couple of months, the business earned millions of dollars. In 1997 it earned over 5 million dollars.
