Kiran Mazumdar Shaw: From a Brewer to a Biotech Boss

Biocon was started in 1978 when Bangalore which had yet to become the hub of technology of South India. With rented garage for office investment of just Rs 10000, she had to face a variety of problems and challenges. Banks were not keen to give her loan because biotechnology was a new field and women entrepreneurship was quite rare.

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, the founder of Biocon, a biotech company and Asia's largest insulin maker is one of the richest women in India.

But did you know that this business powerhouse lady was indeed originally trained to become a brewer in Australia, before returning to India to follow in her father's footsteps as a brew-master.

However, this was still the era of nil female presence in a conventionally macho profession of brewing so she struggled to find a job on her return. The solution came in setting up her own business, although she once called it an accident in the interview with BBC.com

"This is why I call myself an accidental entrepreneur - because it was an accidental encounter with another entrepreneur… who wanted to set up shop in India and… asked me whether I would be able to partner this venture," she said.
