Ginni Rometty: First-Ever Woman CEO in IBM's 100-year History

Born and raised in Chicago Illinois on July 29 1957, Virginia Marie “Ginni” Rometty was a brilliant math student. But apart from being a bright student, Ginni used to be a good Volleyball player. She also served as the president of the student council. But after her father left the family, she was broken. It changed her life completely, and from there Ginni decided to do something for which her mother can feel proud.

Her mother worked in a school, and Ginni stayed at home to take care of her siblings. She earned a big scholarship from General Motors and attended Northwestern University where she completed her Bachelor’s degree in computer science and electrical engineering. For high honours, she went to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and North Carolina State University.

After completing her studies in 1979, Ginni Rometty did her first job with General Motors as an engineer on trucks and buses. And after a year, she joined IBM as a system engineer and became a revolutionary star of the company. Ten years later, she became senior vice president of the company. Moreover, Rometty led the successful integration of PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting, which was the largest acquisition in professional services history. She also became the general manager of IBM Global Services.

In 2012 Ginni Rometty became the first-ever women CEO in IBM’s 100-year history. She was known to take quick and bold decisions. During her tenure as CEO, Rometty has proclaimed IBM’s transition into a data company and shifted the focus on its cloud and Artificial Intelligence Business. Also, Ginni Rometty was honoured in Bloomberg’s ‘’50 Most Influential People in World” and Fortune’s “50 Most Powerful Women in Business.
Apart from having an intelligent working mind, Ginni also took several initiatives to create a better environment for the employees, especially for women. She introduced ship breast milk to mothers at work and established a reconnection program for women’s re-entry after longer maternity leaves.
