DEEPINDER GOYAL: Meet the man behind the famous food app 'Zomato'

Deepinder Goyal was born on January 26, 1983, in Muktsar, Punjab. His parents worked as teachers. Deepinder did his graduation from IIT Delhi in 2005 with Mathematics and Computing degree. After completing his Bachelor's, Deepinder worked at Bain & Company as a management consultant.

Deepinder Goyal is a young and successful entrepreneur. He is the Founder and CEO of the very famous food delivery app in India, Zomato. Zomato is India's largest aggregator restaurant. It was founded in 2008.  Zomato today is available in 24 countries and 10,000+ cities. His approximate net worth is calculated to be Rs. 2000 crores. India is a huge market for food-related items but is dominated only by 2-3 brands all over the country, one of them is Zomato. Zomato has an estimated valuation of $3.9 billion, according to media reports.

After completing his Bachelor's, Deepinder worked at Bain & Company as a management consultant. In this company, he noticed that everybody has to stand in long queues to place their order. He along with his partner Pankaj thought of creating a site that could save a lot of time for having food.

The site gained huge traffic on its launch from where Deepinder thought that this could lead to a revolution in the food-tech industry. After its launch, it first started operating in Kolkata and Mumbai. In 2010, its reach was expanded to deliver in Pune and Bangalore.

Zomato was launched as FoodieBay but was renamed 'Zomato' in 2010.  Zomato is headquartered in New Delhi.

In 2011, Deepinder along with his partner Pankaj who worked together at Bain and Company left their jobs to focus completely on the growth of their startup. They left their positions after getting a huge fund amount of $1 million from Info Edge. This boosted the growth of the company to a greater level of success. In 2018, Zomato received the status of Unicorn company.

In January 2021, Deepinder announced that till 2020 Zomato was receiving 4,100 orders per minute.

The idea behind Zomato was to provide the audiences with a single platform where they can choose from multiple platforms with all the reviews and ratings for that particular food restaurant.

Zomato faced a recent controversy with the announcement of 10-minute delivery. Questions were raised for the safety of the delivery agents and for the consumers on how the food can be cooked and delivered within 10 minutes without compromising the quality of the food.

Deepinder tied the knot with Kanchan Joshi. She is an assistant professor at the University of Delhi. The couple is blessed with a girl named Siara.

In the year 2014 Zomato won Deloitte Technology Fast 50 India awards for being the fastest technology firm/company in India. Zomato won startup of the year awards in 2021 at ET Awards 2021.
