Shakira's Critique: 'Barbie' Viewed as Emasculating by Her Sons

"My sons absolutely hated it. They felt that it was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent. I’m raising two boys. I want them to feel powerful too, while also respecting women. I appreciate pop culture when it empowers women without undermining men's ability to embrace their masculinity, to fulfill their roles as protectors and providers," she stated.

In a recent interview with Allure magazine, renowned singer Shakira shared her candid opinions about the widely-discussed movie 'Barbie' directed by Greta Gerwig. Expressing her dissatisfaction, Shakira revealed that her sons had a strong aversion to the film, citing it as "emasculating," as reported by Variety.

Shakira, who shares Sasha, aged nine, and Mila, aged eleven, with her ex-partner Gerard Pique, emphasized her belief in providing women with the tools and confidence to excel without sacrificing their femininity. She underscored the importance of recognizing the unique roles of both men and women in society, emphasizing their complementary nature.

Prior to Shakira's comments, criticism had already been directed at the film. Podcaster Matt Walsh labeled it as "the most aggressively anti-man, feminist propaganda fest ever put to film," while Bill Maher condemned it as "man-hating."
