The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee has issued a legal notice to the producers of the film Emergency, which the apex religious body of the Sikhs has alleged distorts the character and history of the Sikhs.
In the notice, Amanbir Singh Siali, legal adviser for the SGPC, has demanded the producers to take off the trailer released on August 14 from public places and social media. The letter also demanded a written apology for hurting the sentiments of the Sikh community.
On August 21, Akal Takht and SGPC had demanded an immediate ban on the Emergency, starring actor-MP Ranaut, saying that it tries to "character-assassinate" the Sikhs.
SGPC secretary Partap Singh, while strongly objecting to the film, said on Tuesday that separate letters were written to the Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting and Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification to ban the film.
Partap Singh told IANS, "Acting upon the directions given by SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami, a legal notice has been sent to the film producers, including Kangana Ranaut, who is also the BJP MP from Mandi".
He further added after the release of the film trailer, many "anti-Sikh scenes had come to light, which deeply hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community."
