An unidentified individual finds themselves under the scrutiny of Mumbai Police, as they investigate a concerning deepfake video featuring Bollywood icon Aamir Khan purportedly endorsing a political party. The FIR, initiated by Khan's office and lodged at Khar police station on Wednesday, cites pertinent sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act, including 419 (impersonation) and 420 (cheating), among others.
The 27-second clip, allegedly altered with the assistance of artificial intelligence (AI), depicts Khan discussing the importance of steering clear from political rhetoric ('jumla'). Interestingly, the footage appears to be a manipulation of a scene from a ten-year-old episode of his renowned television show, 'Satyamev Jayate'.
A spokesperson for Khan vehemently denied any association of the actor with a political party, stressing his long-standing commitment to raising electoral awareness through Election Commission initiatives. They clarified Khan's stance, expressing alarm over the deceptive video circulating online and asserting its falsity. Khan, taking swift action, reported the matter to relevant authorities, including the Cyber Crime Cell of Mumbai Police, and initiated the FIR.
Despite the ordeal, Khan's dedication to encouraging civic engagement remains unwavering. His spokesperson reiterated his call for active participation in the electoral process, urging citizens to exercise their voting rights responsibly.
As the country braces for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, scheduled in seven phases from April 19 to June 1, Khan's appeal resonates, emphasizing the significance of every individual's role in shaping the nation's future.
