Mithun Chakraborty to Receive Dadasaheb Phalke Award

Legendary actor Mithun Chakraborty will be conferred with this year's Dadasaheb Phalke award. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw made the announcement on Monday with a post on X.

Mithun Chakraborty Ji, for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema," Minister Vaishnaw declared.

The minister added that this award will be given at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony on October 8.

The art house drama *Mrigayaa* (1976) by Mrinal Sen was actor's debut, and for that film, he gained his first National Film Award for Best Actor. The film was a huge box office success in the country and abroad, particularly in the then Soviet Union.

He started his acting career with Mrigayaa and went on to become a rage after the release of his 1982 film Disco Dancer, doing phenomenal business in Asia, the (then) Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Turkey, and Africa.

It has barely been months since Mithun Chakraborty was conferred the Padma Bhushan and now he has been conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. The ceremony was in April, and the actor accepted the honour from President Droupadi Murmu. "I am very happy. I have never asked for anything for myself from anyone in my life.". When the call came from the Home Ministry, saying that I was to get the Padma Bhushan, I was silent for a minute because I hadn't expected it," he said after accepting the honour.

Some of his other films include Agneepath, Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye, Hum Se Hai Zamana, Pasand Apni Apni, Ghar Ek Mandir, and Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki, among many others. More recently, he was seen in OMG: Oh My God.

Mithun Chakraborty was born Gouranga Chakraborty on June 16, 1950.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is the most prestigious award instituted in the country for the world of Indian cinema. The Directorate of Film Festivals, an organisation established by the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, confers this honor on the selected stalwarts every year. The winner is thus rewarded for his outstanding contribution in the development and growth of Indian cinema. The first award was made in 1969 to commemorate the contribution of Dadasaheb Phalke to the world of Indian cinema.
