Singer-songwriter Miley Cyrus is now being sued for similarities between her hit track 'Flowers' and Bruno Mars' hit track 'When I Was Your Man'.
The case has been filed in the court of Los Angeles, and it was set in motion by Tempo Music Investments, which owns a share of the copyright in Mars's hit after it acquired songwriter Philip Lawrence's music catalogue, 'People' magazine reports.
Tempo Music Investments said that many have "recognized the striking similarities" once 'Flowers' was released. The filings, as obtained by 'People,' stated that the song 'Flowers' "uses numerous melodic, harmonic and lyrical elements" of Mars' song.
"It is undeniable based on the combination and number of similarities between the two recordings that 'Flowers' would not exist without 'When I Was Your Man'".
"Accordingly, Plaintiff brings this action for copyright infringement arising out of Defendants' unauthorised reproduction, distribution and exploitation of 'When I Was Your Man'", the complaint added.
Further according to 'People', Tempo Music Investments also listed 'Flowers' songwriters Gregory Hein and Michael Pollack, who wrote the track with Cyrus, among multiple defendants in the suit, along with Sony Music Publishing and Apple. Mars has not been named as a plaintiff in the filing.
In the documents, the investment platform claims that it acquired "the copyright interests" of Mars' hit, which was written by the singer, 38, Lawrence, 44, Ari Levine and Andrew Wyatt, "in or around 2020".
In the lawsuit, one of the many assertions is that "the introductory vocal line from chorus of 'Flowers' begins and ends on the same chords as the introductory vocal line in the verse of 'When I Was Your Man'".
The Tempo Music Investments claims that Cyrus and the defendants in the lawsuit must no longer reproduce, distribute or publicly perform 'Flowers'.
