Maya Hawke, the daughter of Hollywood legends Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, acknowledges her status as a "nepo baby" in the entertainment industry and embraces it.
In a recent interview, Hawke admitted that her family's Hollywood connections played a role in her being cast as Flower Child, one of Charles Manson’s followers, in Quentin Tarantino’s film ‘Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood.’
“I’ve been wildly made fun of for this clip when I said, on the red carpet, that I auditioned. I never meant to imply that I didn’t get the part for nepotistic reasons, I think I totally did,” Maya stated.
The ‘Stranger Things’ actress discussed whether she deserves the opportunities she has had in Hollywood, saying, “‘Deserves’ is a complex word…there are countless people who deserve this kind of life but don’t get it. I’m okay with not deserving it and doing it anyway. I know that my not doing it wouldn’t benefit anyone. When I first started, I saw two paths: change my name, get a nose job, and go to open casting calls.”
“It’s OK to be made fun of when you’re in rarefied air. It’s a lucky place to be. My relationships with my parents are really honest and positive, and that supersedes anything anyone can say about it,” Maya Hawke added.
The conversation about the "Nepo Baby" phenomenon is growing increasingly prevalent. Several celebrities have addressed it after facing criticism for being perceived as undeserving of their careers.
Kate Moss’ sister, Lottie Moss, expressed her thoughts on nepotism: “I’m so tired of people blaming nepotism for their lack of wealth, fame, or success. Obviously, it’s unfair that those from famous families have an advantage, but guess what? Life isn’t fair. If you set your mind to something, you can achieve it.”
