Maharashtra Cyber Police Files FIR Against X User for Sharing Deepfake Video Featuring Ranveer Singh

The video, said to be manipulated, purports that Ranveer Singh endorses the Congress party, while in a media interview in Varanasi to promote a fashion event, he said he admired Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The FIR has described the video as a false representation of Singh's words, making it seem like he supported a political party when in fact he never did so.

For this reason, the cyber cell of Maharashtra police has filed an FIR against one person named X user, who had allegedly distributed an alleged "deepfake" video featuring actor Ranveer Singh endorsing the Congress party. The complainant, Jugjeet Singh Bhavnani, the father of the actor, filed the complaint against the user @sujataindia1st.

The FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 417 (cheating), 468 (forgery), and 469 (harming reputation), besides provisions under the Information Technology Act.

The police is tracing the issue with great seriousness and it underlines the seriousness of the issue. This case follows the path of another such case recently, where an anonymous person was held liable under law for the circulation of a deepfake video featuring Bollywood actor Aamir Khan endorsing a political party. Authorities continue fighting such deceitful practices that take away from public confidence and manage political narratives.
