The movie 'Kalki 2898 AD' – starring Prabhas and Deepika Padukone – performed relatively well at the box office soon after its release last month. It is mired in legal controversy currently with respect to the representation of religious texts.
Acharya Pramod Krishnam, the Kalki Peethadheeshwar of Shri Kalki Dham, has issued a legal notice to all the filmmakers, including the director, producer, and actors. He sought a public apology for what he called "gross distortion, misrepresentation, and twisted depiction" of Lord Kalki in the movie.
It has categorically stated that the film should not be distributed or published on any OTT platform or in any other media until the historical inaccuracies pointed out in the notice are corrected.
Acharya Pramod Krishnam said the legal notice against the film's makers was issued, "Not to trouble them, but to ensure that religious sentiments are respected." "It was to ensure that they desist from distortion, misrepresentation and wrongful depiction of religious and sacred texts in the movie 'Kalki 2898 AD'," he told.
He has also expressed reservations over the timing of the film's release, particularly in light of the recent efforts that are being made to do honor to Lord Kalki, wherein Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently laid the foundation for Kalki Dham at Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh.
"I want to ask the filmmakers what they want to achieve by hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus. What will they achieve by belittling and demeaning the Sanatan Dharma? We won't allow such mockery of our religious beliefs."
In the background of all this, the film has still been able to strike gold at the box office, earning Rs 600 crore in just one month since its release, emerging as one of the big successes this year.
