Netflix has characterized Goodbye June as a poignant as well as comic exploration of familial relationships in troubled times. The choice of having Winslet take on the project as a director stems from her increasing sense of responsibility towards the women in filmmaking. With a look backward at her past reluctance to serve as a director, Winslet discussed the highly demanding nature of directing on the How to Fail podcast.

But over the years, there was a growing sense of pressure to make something happen, particularly in ways that would be helping other women toiling in Hollywood.

She explained, “The more I’m not doing it now, with the need to change the culture, the more I feel like I’m actually letting down other women by not doing it.”

Kate Winslet is positive that the rise in the number of women at the helm of cameras will become an inspiration for others to follow, eventually altering the landscape of the industry. Taking cue from her long background working in front of the cameras, Winslet feels it's time for her to take the challenge of direction.

She explained that her strong grasp of the technical aspects of filmmaking has made her confident enough to take on the director's role, having the skills to excel.

Goodbye June is a turning point for Winslet's career, signaling the crossing into a behind-the-scenes creative position while still performing at an elite acting level. Winslet recently starred in the biographical drama Lee as the well-known war correspondent and photographer Lee Miller, in addition to making her directorial debut.
