Judi Dench Opens Up About Vision Challenges Impacting Film Career

Dench has kept largely out of the cameras since the release of her musical "Spirited" in 2022.  Asked by Deadline reporters at the Chelsea Flower Show what she was working on next, she said candidly, "No, no. I can't even see." Dench has talked publicly of her battle with macular degeneration, a condition that causes blindness. In an earlier interview with Louis Theroux, she spoke about not wanting to retire and commented, "I'm not doing much at the moment because I can't see. It's bad."

Legendary actress Judi Dench hinted that her legendary life in front of the camera might soon be over since her eyesight has gone from bad to worse. The 89-year-old Dench left an indelible mark in theatre, television, and the cinema with an impressive collection of awards: an Oscar, a Tony, two Golden Globes, and an armful of BAFTAs.

Though the actress faces the challenges of her failing vision, Dench is undaunted, saying, "I have a photographic memory so a person saying to me, 'This is your line…' I can do that."
