The music icon Cher recently came out on the relationship with her late ex-husband Sonny Bono-saying that, unlike everybody else believed to know, the romance was not driven by love at first sight.
Recalling the story of herself and Bono, Cher dished her thoughts with People magazine and spoke a little more about it when she is due to appear on CBS Sunday Morning, of which she sat with Anthony Mason.
Mason recalled, "In 1962, you meet Sonny in a coffee shop. He's wearing a mohair suit and a mustard colour shirt." Cher, smiling said, "With a white collar and Beatle boots, but they were called Cuban.".
Asked what she felt about Bono at the time, Cher did not hesitate, saying with a citation of the famous romance in West Side Story, "I thought it was like when Tony met Maria. I mean, everybody disappeared." But despite the enchanting feel in the air, Cher admitted that "He didn't like me." She continued explaining, "It wasn't love at first sight. It was something. I never felt it before.".
Cher, 16 then, accepted his offer to be his housekeeper and eventually ended up in a romantic affair with 27-year-old Bono. Cher exclaimed, "He liked my girlfriend," adding when she had to move in with him, he said, "You know, you can come and stay with me." She continued, "And I was like, 'OK.' And he went, 'No, no.". I don't find you particularly attractive.' So I was upset and happy at the same time.'
Mason also asked about their 11-year age gap, to which Cher answered that Sonny was "kind of childish," which made him "real" with her. "Because I didn't expect anything. I didn't want money. I didn't think about anything, you know."
Then Cher continues to relate that the other women vying for the affection of Bono at that time were asking him to become "more grown up." She then shares a humorous anecdote concerning one occasion when they "got a candle and we just watercoloured all day long. We (were) trying to get it right. And I don't think those ladies wanted to do that."
