Top contenders for the just announced Oscar nominations include the Spanish-language musical crime film 'Emilia Perez.'
The story in this film follows that of a drug lord who happens to go under gender affirming surgery, 'Variety' reports.
The movie has got 13 nods for the academy award edition in its next print. It closely follows 'The Brutalist, the historical epic exploring the migrant life, and Wicked-the stage-to-screener, that adaptation of a long running hit Broadway extravaganza; all three fetched in 10 nods.
In other news, Indian film 'Anuja' is also nominated for Best Live Action Short Film supported by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Guneet Monga Kapoor.
According to 'Variety', 'Conclave', a thriller about the election of a new pope, and 'A Complete Unknown', a look at Bob Dylan's early, freewheeling years, each had eight nominations. All five of those films are up for best picture, the ceremony’s top prize, alongside indies like ‘Anora’, ‘Nickel Boys’, and ‘I’m Still Here’ as well as the body horror film, ‘The Substance’, and ‘Dune: Part Two’, one of the rare studio blockbusters to garner Oscar attention.
The Academy Awards nominations were released on Thursday, after voting had been extended twice due to the devastating wildfires that have ravaged Los Angeles, killing at least 28 people and causing catastrophic property damage.
The Oscars announced earlier this week that its March telecast will "acknowledge those who fought so bravely against the wildfires.".
Timothee Chalamet, who has proven his box office drawing power with 'Dune' and 'Wonka', was nominated for best actor for his chameleonic performance as Dylan in 'A Complete Unknown'. He will face off against 'The Brutalist' star Adrien Brody, who became the youngest best actor winner in history at 29 for 2003's 'The Pianist'.
The best actor category also sees competition from the likes of Colman Domingo, Ralph Fiennes, and Sebastian Stan. Stan received his nomination following the 'Donald Trump Biopic' known as 'The Apprentice', in which he appears alongside Donald Trump. It failed to secure distribution following some concerns that firms might end up offending the 47th president. Jeremy Strong, his co-star who plays Roy Cohn, the mentor to Donald Trump, received a nomination in the best supporting actor category.
