Karnataka polls: Shettar adamant on contesting even after top leaders' intervention
During the meeting, Nadda tried to mollify Shettar but the senior party leader from Karnataka refused to budge from his stance. Shettar reportedly told the saffron party chief that he wishes to contest the polls. During a media interaction, Shettar said he has won the last six elections, and intends to contest the May 10 election. The former Karnataka chief minister claimed that Nadda assured him of taking a decision on his and other leaders' demands following a discussion.

Earlier on Tuesday, the saffron party had announced the names of 189 candidates in its first list. The party has also announced candidates for the by-elections to be held in the Jalandhar Lok Sabha constituency in Punjab and the Jharsuguda Assembly by-election in Odisha. The party has declared Sardar Inder Iqbal Singh Atwal as its candidate for the Jalandhar Lok Sabha bypoll and Tankadhar Tripathi for the Jharsuguda Assembly bypoll.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tuesday announced its first list of 189 candidates for the election that is scheduled to be held on May 10 According to a top BJP source, Home Minister Amit Shah chaired the meeting and discussion was held on each name suggested by the party's Karnataka core group.

But according to BJP sources, he is likely to return disappointed. While interacting with reporters before leaving for the national capital, Shettar said, "BJP National President J.P. Nadda has invited me and am leaving for the national capital. Am sure that meeting the National President is a good development from the party's perspective."

While interacting with the media, Eshwarappa stated that he is in constant touch with the high command. "BJP does not derive strength from any individual. The party has not followed the Gujarat model in selection of candidates," he said. After seeing the first list of BJP, the opposition Congress has become jittery. The people would elect the BJP government in the state, he said.

The list was released at the party headquarters here by Karnataka election in-charge and Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan and BJP General Secretary and Karnataka in-charge Arun Singh in the presence of other leaders. Chief Minister Basavraj Bommai will contest from his Shiggaon constituency.

The opposition parties, Congress and JD(S) have already announced their candidates for most of the seats. The BJP has taken time and is likely to announce tickets for 150 to 175 seats out of 224 constituencies. The state unit had already sent a list finalizing two to three candidates for each constituency to the party's Central Election Committee (CEC) in Delhi.

As per a top source, the meeting will finalise the names.
