UPSC 2020 Results: Bihar's Shubham Kumar gets first rank, 12 women among top 25 successful candidates

UPSC topper Shubham Kumar has said that he was not sure about cracking the examination this year, which was his third attempt. His first attempt was in 2018. "After the second attempt in 2019, I got the 290th rank, and then I got into the Indian Defence Account Service," he said.

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Friday declared the 2020 civil services examination (CSE) results. A total of 761 candidates have been recommended for appointment. Shubham Kumar, an IIT-Bombay graduate from Bihar emerged as the rank 1 holder followed by Jagrati Awasthi, from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh who bagged rank 2 and Ankita Jain at rank 3.

He further added how preparing during covid felt like preparing in a locked room as he was all by himself and friends to talk to become less. He is currently in the National Academy of Defence Financial Management Pune as an official trainee in the Indian Accounts Service.

Jagrati Awasthi, rank 2 holder pursued B.Tech in electrical engineering from MANIT Bhopal and worked at BHEL for 2 years before quitting the job for further preparations of civil services. Talking to Times of India, She revealed  how her parents had delayed buying a TV for four years as her brother was also preparing for the NEET examinations. She further said: "If given equal opportunity, what is it that women cannot do? With the support of family and others, they can do wonders". This was Jagrati's second attempt and while she couldn't clear the prelims at her first, she ranked top among all women candidates in her second try.

Also, 2015 IAS topper Tina Dabi's sister Ria Dabi secured the 15th position.  "It feels really nice and I am happy. I was not expecting this. You need to start preparing right from the school and the college," she said.

She studied 10 hours a day to prepare for the UPSC exams and said that the preparations had started after she graduated from Lady Shri Ram College. She currently resides with her family at BSNL Colony, Kalibari Marg in the national capital. She chose civil services as it would give her an opportunity to connect with people and work for the welfare of the citizens.

Out of the 761 candidates of 2020, 545 were men and 216 women which is 28.3%. Moreover out of the 25 top rank holders, 12 are backed by women. The percentage of women's recommendations for CSE has also improved compared to the past years.
