The Canadian federal government has announced more cuts on international students to control the volume of temporary resident arrivals.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) said in a news release on Wednesday that in 2025 new international student study permits will be reduced by 10 percent from the 2024 target of 485,000 which means reducing study permits issued to 437,000, news agency reported.
According to the release, the total number of study permits that will be issued in 2026 will be the same as that of 2025.
This is after a previous measure made in January when the federal government said it would approve about 360,000 undergraduate study permits in 2024. This cuts down to a reduction of 35 per cent from nearly 560,000 issued last year 2023.
Estimates reveal that the population of Canada now has reached 41 million as of the first quarter of 2024, while temporary residents have increased sharply. This year, IRCC said there would be a drop in temporary residents-the share, which had been at 6.5% of the total people in Canada, going down to 5% by 2026.
