Breaking Barriers: Prof Naima Khatoon Makes History as AMU's First Female Vice Chancellor

Aligarh Muslim University marked a significant milestone on Monday as it welcomed its first female Vice Chancellor, Professor Naima Khatoon, a distinguished psychologist. This appointment heralds a new era for the prestigious institution, which has been shaping minds for over a century.

The announcement came through a notification from the Education Ministry's Higher Education Department, confirming President Droupadi Murmu's appointment of Prof. Naima Khatoon. She is set to lead the university for a five-year term, commencing from the date she assumes office or until she reaches the age of 70, whichever comes first.

The appointment received clearance from the Election Commission, ensuring compliance with the Model Code of Conduct. However, it was emphasized that the appointment should not be exploited for publicity or political gains.

Prof. Naima Khatoon brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having served as the Principal of AMU's Women's College since July 2014. Prior to this, she held the position of Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Psychology. Her expertise lies in clinical, health, applied social, and spiritual psychology.

Additionally, she has been instrumental in directing the Centre for Skill Development & Career Planning at AMU since October 2015. Prof. Naima Khatoon earned her PhD in Political Psychology, conducting research at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi, and AMU. Her academic journey began in 1988 when she joined as a lecturer, eventually rising to the ranks of Associate Professor and Professor.

Her dedication to academia extends beyond the confines of AMU, as she spent an academic year teaching at the National University of Rwanda. Prof. Naima Khatoon's scholarly contributions are globally recognized, with presentations at numerous national and international conferences, and lectures delivered at universities across Europe, North America, and Asia.

She is a prolific author, co-author, and editor of six books, in addition to publishing extensively in esteemed national and international journals. Prof. Naima Khatoon has supervised fifteen PhD theses and numerous dissertations, demonstrating her commitment to nurturing future scholars.

Her administrative prowess is evident in her previous roles as Provost in Indira Gandhi Hall and Abdullah Hall, as well as Deputy Proctor. With her multifaceted expertise and dedication to education, Prof. Naima Khatoon is poised to lead Aligarh Muslim University into a promising future of academic excellence and inclusivity.
