The only woman on Time magazine’s 1998 list of the 20 most influential geniuses of the 20th century, Lauder was the second child of Rose Schotz and Mentzer born on July 1, 1906. Her parents were Hungarian-Jewish immigrants. She graduated from Newtown High School in Elmhurst, Queens, New York.
