In a tweet late Thursday, Oosterom had said: "You should not have abstained in the GA. Respect the UN Charter." To this, Tirumurti replied: "Kindly don't patronize us Ambassador. We know what to do." Oosterom's tweet referred to India's abstention on a resolution condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine and on another to strip Moscow of its UN Human Rights Council membership. He gave the advice in reply to Tirumurti's tweet of his address to the Security Council on Thursday.

S.Jaishankar made these remarks in US where he and Rajnath Singh are attending 2+2 meet with their counterparts.  Amid the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia,  India's decision to  purchase oil from Russia, despite many sanctions against Moscow, has raised eyebrows in US and Europe. Earlier, MEA had also pointed out that  Europe was still importing Russian oil and therefore,  political colouring should not be attributed to India only.

During the meeting on April 11, External Affairs Minister S. Blinken had called Jaishankar on Wednesday last week on the eve of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's visit to New Delhi and spoke about "the worsening humanitarian situation in Ukraine", Price said. In diplomatic overtures to India, US Deputy National Security Adviser Daleep Singh visited New Delhi last week and the Ukraine situation and the US sanctions on trade with Russia came up in his discussions with the Indian officials.

"Today, we see challenges on that score with the clarity that proximity brings," Jaishankar said. He added: "And believe me, distance is no insulation. The issues we confront in the Indo-Pacific will extend beyond, even to Europe."
