Police said the gunfire on Tuesday erupted around 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time in northeast Washington shortly after a funeral ended for someone who was fatally shot in March. At least four people were shot, according to Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee. One man died at the scene and three more people -- two men and a woman -- were reportedly taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The police operation took place on Tuesday, Xinhua news agency reported. The event occurred in Vila Cruzeiro during an operation by the Federal Police, the Federal Highway Police and the Military Police, which was aimed at capturing the heads of the largest criminal faction in the city. According to the Military Police, the agents were met with gunfire in the upper part of the favela.

According to reports from the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police, one police officer died as a result of the shootout, while the other 22 people killed were allegedly members of a criminal organisation that dominates the Jacarezinho favela. The shootout between police and alleged drug traffickers occurred in the early hours of Thursday in the favela, as part of a Civil Police operation against drug trafficking and organised crime in the area
