Indian equities settle negative as metal, PSU banks sink

Lately, Indian equities have witnessed a continued sell-off by overseas investors, and new investors seemed to have stayed away amid the ongoing volatility, said analysts. The indices traded lower all throughout the session on Wednesday. The Sensex and Nifty settled at 57,788 points and 17,221 points, down 0.57 per cent, and 0.60 per cent from their previous close, respectively.

Besides, investors will look out for other major factors like global oil prices along with progression of Covid-19's Omicron variant. Last week, both the key indices - S&P BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50 - gained the most in eight weeks on a relief rally from the overwhelming fears about Omicron variant of the coronavirus. However, the bounce ran out of energy towards the end of the week and just ahead of the US inflation data.

Besides, reports of IT notices to some global fund houses have also subdued investors' sentiment. Notably, on last Friday, the FIIs sold stocks worth Rs 3,356.17 crore on the BSE, the NSE and the MSEI in the capital market segment. Globally, shares were mixed in Asia on Monday after troubled Chinese property developer Evergrande warned late Friday it may run out of money.
Equity indices fall on profit booking, Covid concerns; oil stocks down

The key indices rose in the first few minutes of the day's trade, but soon ceded gains and later went into the negative territory as recent upsurges triggered a bout of profit booking. Globally, stocks were mostly higher in Asia on Friday after a broad rally on Wall Street. Similarly, European shares opened firmer. On the domestic front, volumes were a bit higher than the previous two sessions.

However, fears of a potential rise in the number of Omicron infections in several countries, including India, capped the upside in indices. Initially, the market opened on a positive note and remained in the green throughout the session.

At 9.30 a.m., the S&P BSE Sensex traded at 57,992 points, up 0.5 per cent. It opened at 57,781 points from the previous close of 57,684 points. Till now it touched a low of 57,680 points. Besides, the broader 50-scrip Nifty at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) opened at 17,183 points after closing at 17,166 on Wednesday.
Equity indices settle in red, Tata Steel among top losers

Notably, the indices opened the session on a positive note. The barometer 30-scrip Sensex closed at 57,064 points, down by 195 points or 0.34 per cent from its previous close. Similarly, the broader 50-scrip Nifty closed the day at 16,983 points, down by 71 points or 0.4 per cent from its previous close. In terms of stocks, shares of Tata Steel, Kotak Mahindra Bank, JSW Steel, Adani Ports and Bajaj Auto were the top losers

Besides, the broader 50-scrip Nifty at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) opened at 17,055 points after closing at 17,053 on Monday.
Equity indices fall marginally in early trade

At 9.45 a.m. the S&P BSE Sensex traded at 57,044 points, down 0.13 per cent. It opened at 57,028 points from the previous close of 57,107 points. Till now it touched a low of 56,382 points.
