On his way to becoming the youngest player to score a double century in the ODI format and fifth to do so from India, Gill had to overcome early jitters to be a dominating force in the innings. IND v NZ, 3rd ODI: Once Finn Allen got his eye in, he capitalised on loose stuff, says Ravi Shastri

Allen, an ultra-aggressive right-handed opener, was quiet for the first three overs in New Zealand's chase of 220. But after that, he couldn't be kept quiet, clipping a down leg delivery from Arshdeep Singh for his first boundary of the match. After that, there was no stopping Allen in getting boundaries and he got his fifty when he flat-batted a six over long-off off Washington Sundar.

IND v NZ, 3rd ODI: Washington Sundar's 51 carries India to a modest 219 against New Zealand

On a pitch, where there was a lot of grass and lateral movement, and with overcast conditions, India's innings never really got going, till Sundar stood up and applied himself to hit five fours and a six in a 64-ball knock to take the visitors past 200-mark. Apart from him, Shreyas Iyer also played a handy knock of 49 as rest of the batters struggled and perished to a disciplined bowling show by New Zealand. For the hosts, Daryl Mitchell being used as the fifth bowler was a master-stroke, picking 3/25 in his seven overs.

The match began under gloomy skies and a threat of rain but it stayed away for the toss to happen. Hosts New Zealand opted to bowl first and India openers Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill started cautiously before the rain disrupted their innings on 22/0 in the fifth over.

IND v NZ, 2nd ODI: Hooda came in for Samson as wanted a sixth bowler, says Shikhar Dhawan
IANS -
Now, after the match was abandoned, captain Shikhar Dhawan revealed why the Hooda for Samson swap happened. "We wanted the sixth bowler to come in, so that's why we brought Deepak Hooda in place of Sanju Samson. With Deepak Chahar, we wanted to try him as well in this series and get one more swing bowler in the team, who can trouble the batters," he said in the post-match presentation ceremony.
