Vienna Open: Medvedev marches into final with win over Dimitrov
The 26-year-old came up against a confident opponent striking the ball cleanly but the top seed had all the answers. Just as it had against Jannik Sinner in Friday's quarterfinals, Medvedev's relentless retrieving and precise serving proved the difference as he charged to a 85-minute victory to reach the championship match in Vienna for the first time. Dimitrov had hit his stride en route to the semifinals in Vienna, where he was particularly impressive in taking out third seed Andrey Rublev in the second round.
Vienna Open: Rock-solid Medvedev sinks Sinner to reach semis
The world No.4 did not face a break point in the match and converted three of six break points of his own as he improved his ATP head-to-head series record against the Italian to 4-0. "Jannik is a top player, and he can pose problems to anybody basically. In the last two Grand Slams, he played five sets with the [eventual] winner, so Jannik is a top player and I'm really happy today with my performance," said Medvedev after the match.
Vienna Open: Medvedev tames Thiem, Hurkacz beats Ruusuvuori
Both players came out firing in a hard-fought opening set at the indoor ATP 500 event. Thiem delighted the vocal home crowd with some clean hitting off both wings from the baseline, while Medvedev countered with some trademark defiant defence. After clinching the first break of the match for 4-3, however, the top seed's combination of consistent, powerful hitting came to the
fore as he accelerated away to a 98-minute victory.
Moselle Open: Wawrinka sinks Sousa, will face Medvedev in second round
Wawrinka has struggled to find his best level since returning to Tour in April after missing 13 months due to a foot injury, but the 16-time tour-level titlist gave frequent reminders of his ability with a series of trademark clean backhand winners to overpower World No 55 Sousa. "It's always difficult to play against him. We played a few times in the past, always a tough match, but I'm really, really happy," said Wawrinka after securing his fourth tour-level main-draw win of 2022.
Nick Kyrgios sets up mouth-watering clash against Daniil Medvedev in US Open
The 23rd seed Kyrgios, a Wimbledon finalist this year, fended off all seven break points he faced and took one hour, 54 minutes to get past the American on the Louis Armstrong Stadium, and will need to beat the tall Russian to secure his maiden appearance in the quarterfinals. Medvedev took the court after the pulsating three-hour final between Serena Williams and Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic inside Arthur Ashe Stadium and defeated China's Wu Yibing 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 to reach the second week for the fourth consecutive year
Los Cabos Open: Daniil Medvedev advances to quarters, earns 250th career win
During the process, the World No 1 also earned his 250th match win as he returned to his favoured hard courts for the first time since his run to the Miami quarterfinals in March. "Somebody told me this a few days ago at media day, otherwise I would not have known," Medvedev said of reaching the 250-wins landmark. "That's probably a milestone in a way. For sure I want more victories but that's also nice to have 250. We'll try to get more," he added. Medvedev secured his first break of the match to seal the opening set as he settled in on the Los Cabos stadium court, then converted on his fifth break point of the second midway through the set.
World No 1 Medvedev crashes out of Mallorca Championships
It was not the first time the 34-year-old Spaniard has troubled Medvedev. In fact, Bautista Agut won their three previous meetings outside of Halle with the loss of just one set. Medvedev consistently frustrates opponents with his solid play, flat strokes and big first serve that puts them under pressure throughout the match. But it was the top seed who was visibly frustrated on Thursday, making uncharacteristic errors against Bautista Agut.
