Lt Gen Chauhan (retd) succeeds the first CDS, former Army chief, Gen Bipin Rawat who had died in a helicopter crash on December 8 last year. In a career spanning over nearly 40 years, Lt Gen Chauhan has held several command, staff and instrumental appointments and had extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir and northeast India.

Lt Gen Pande will take over the reign as he is the senior most in the force after General Naravane. In the meantime, Gen Naravane is the front runner for the post of Chief of Defence Staff after the passing of General Bipin Rawat in a helicopter crash December last year. General Rawat, his wife Madhulika and 12 armed personnel were killed in a chopper crash on December 8, 2021.

General Rawat, his wife Madhulika and 12 armed personnel were killed in a chopper crash in Tamil Nadu on December 8, 2021. Others who have been honoured with Padma Vibhushan include Prabha Atre (Art), Kalyan Singh (Public Affairs, Posthumous) and Radhyashyam Khemka (Literature & Education, Posthumous) On January 14 this year, the Court of Inquiry constituted to probe the military chopper crash ruled out mechanical failure, sabotage or negligence as a cause of the accident.

The decision was made as the post of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) fell vacant following the demise of India's first CDS Gen Bipin Rawat in the ill-fated IAF helicopter crash on December 8. The Centre placed in an old system under which Gen Naravane will be taking charge till the appointment of the new Chief of Defence Staff is made.

In the pre-recorded message shared by Indian Army, he congratulated all the brave soldiers of the Indian Army on the occasion of 'Swarnim Vijay Parv' and said, "We are celebrating 50th anniversary of India Army's victory in 1971 war as the 'Vijay Parav'." "It is a matter of great pride that Vijay Parva is being held under the flame of Amar Jawan Jyoti which was made in the remembrance of our brave soldiers," he said.
